Find out who actually pays

Look up your city’s verified rule, owner, city, or shared, at the city lookup
Read the exact code section cited on your city’s record; the answer is the ordinance, not whatever a contractor tells you
Note whether your issue is a sidewalk, a sewer lateral, or tree-root damage, the answer can differ by issue in the same city

If you received a notice

Write down the deadline and exactly what the notice demands
Ask the city, in writing, for the specific code section and the inspection finding behind it
Photograph and date the defect before any work is done
Check whether your city runs a cost-share, rebate, or 50/50 program, and when its application window opens

Before you pay

Get two or three written quotes
Confirm whether a permit is required and who is responsible for pulling it
Ask about senior, disability, or hardship discounts
If tree roots or a city-owned tree caused the damage, check whether that shifts responsibility

Protect yourself

In owner-pays-plus-liability cities, know that an unrepaired defect can also be an injury claim against you, keep it documented
Keep every quote, photo, permit, and receipt together in one file
