# Sewer Lateral Repair in Cincinnati, OH: Who Pays? | Who Pays the Repair?

> Cincinnati owners maintain and clean the whole building sewer, but MSD repairs the part under the street or in a recorded easement, with two exceptions.

**Who pays:** shared

Cincinnati runs the most finely-split rule we found: the owner cleans the whole building sewer, but the district repairs the street/easement segment, unless a building sits over it or you can’t prove where the defect is.

**Boundary:** Repair and reconstruction of the building sewer inside a public street right-of-way or recorded public easement is the Metropolitan Sewer District's responsibility, subject to exceptions; the owner must prove it with a sewer cleaner contractor's receipt.

**Property owner:** MSD Rules: "It shall be the responsibility of the owner or his agent to establish, by means of a valid sewer cleaner contractor's receipt, that such a repair or reconstruction is the responsibility of the District."

**City / agency:** MSD Rules: "Repair and reconstruction of the building sewer in a public street right-of-way or within the specified width of a recorded public easement shall be the responsibility of the District except as follows."

**Exceptions:** The District's repair duty covers only the right-of-way / recorded easement segment and has listed exceptions; the owner must document it with a sewer cleaner contractor's receipt
