**Who pays:** shared

Chicago: the City owns the sidewalk and there is no owner-repair mandate, repair is a voluntary cost-share with CDOT, while snow removal is the enforceable owner duty.

**Boundary:** Chicago owns the public sidewalk and imposes no ordinance requiring the abutting owner to repair it. Repair happens through CDOT’s voluntary Shared Cost Sidewalk Program, in which the owner and the City split the cost (owner rate well below a private contractor; senior/disabled discount). The enforceable owner duty is snow and ice removal (Municipal Code § 10-8-180).

**Property owner:** Remove snow and ice from the abutting sidewalk (5-foot clear path); daytime snow by 10 p.m. same day, overnight snow by 10 a.m. (§ 10-8-180). Sidewalk repair is optional via the Shared Cost program.

**City / agency:** The City owns the sidewalk and shares repair cost with owners through the CDOT Shared Cost Sidewalk Program (applications via 311).
